PREMIER LEAGUE SET TO RETURN ON JUNE 12

The Premier League season is set to restart on 17 June with two games in hand, Aston Villa versus Sheffield United and Manchester City versus Arsenal to get the ball rolling the BBC has learned. After the games in hand, a full fixture list would then be played on the weekend of 19-21 June. Clubs are still discussing the idea at a meeting on Thursday, but it is understood all have agreed in principle at this stage. There are 92 fixtures still to play. The Premier League was suspended on 13 March due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. And it will be 100 days after Leicester City’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa on 9 March that competition will resume, with games played without fans. Elite sport in England could start behind closed doors from June 1, according to government guidelines published on Monday, boosting Premier League clubs’ hopes of completing their season. The government’s road map for exiting the coronavirus lockdown sets out the conditions under which various activities could be safely carried out. Step two of the process, which cannot begin any earlier than June 1, includes “permitting cultural and sporting events to take place behind closed doors for broadcast, while avoiding the risk of large-scale social contact”. Events will only be allowed to take place if sufficient progress is made in limiting the spread of the virus between now and then. The Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Nigeria, His Excellency Adnan Bostaji attended the 5th Nigeria Festival Awards on Sunday 8th December, during which the Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa presented him with an award. The award was in recognition of the His Excellency’s efforts in Nigeria since his assumption of duties in as the Saudi ambassador. Hon. Dabiri-Erewa described the awards as being well deserved, commending the ambassador’s efforts in Nigeria, as well as his prompt intervention in securing the release of Zainab Aliyu. In attendance were the former Minister of Defense Mansour Dan Ali, Chairman of the Investment Promotion Authority in Nigeria, a representative of the governor of Kaduna State, a representative of the Governor of Kano State, a representative of the Minister of Communications amongst other officials.

COVID-19| DOCTORS IN OGUN STATE SET TO GO ON THREE-DAYS WARNING STRIKE

Resident doctors at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun State, says they will be embarking on a three-day warning strike starting from on Monday May 4th. In a letter jointly signed by the President and General Secretary of the Association, Popoola Mutiua and Osundara Tope, respectively, the doctors said they decided to embark on strike to demand for appropriate remuneration for doctors in OOUTH as they battle the COVID-19 pandemic. The aggrieved doctors say the association would review the response of the government after the three-day warning strike. The letter in part reads “We have a human face and we know people are the basis of our practice as medical professionals. We shall, therefore, exclude our members working at COVID-19 isolation centre from joining the strike action. They shall not take part in the strike. Following the three-day warning strike, we shall review the government’s response and appropriate action shall be taken thereafter. ...
